Tree Felling in Shikahogh State Reserve

Tree Felling in Shikahogh State Reserve

Over 50 trees have been cut down in 1500 cum areas included in “Shikahogh” state reserve, a part of “Zangezour” biospheric complex and its adjacent areas as WWF Armenia Director Karen Manvelyan told EcoLur. “We haven’t eye witnessed such mass tree felling “Shikahogh” for a long time,” Karen Manvelyan said.

For our part it should be mentioned when “Zangezour” biospheric complex was established, all the environmentalists were warning, that it was too hazardous to manage 70,000 ha from a center which doesn’t even have its management plan and borders. Nevertheless, the government didn’t pay attention either to environmentalists and experts and established this complex depriving “Shikahogh” reserve from its strict regime and management. We think these tree fellings are the consequences of the government’s conjuncture decision.
