How to Protect Tourism Sector from Climate Change Risks: Government Developed Adaptability Program

RA Economy Ministry has launched on the website www.e-draft.am the draft decision of the Government of the Republic of Armenia "On approving climate change adaptability program and the list of measures for 2022-2026". The draft law lays down climate change adaptation measures in the field of tourism. The action plan envisages the implementation of a number of actions - the adoption of legal acts that can be used to reduce the existing, projected impact of climate change in the tourism sector. One of the key issues facing the tourism industry is rising temperatures. Historical observations of air temperature in Armenia have recorded a significant increase in temperature in recent decades. The average annual temperature is projected to rise by 1.6 °C by 2040, by 3.3 °C by 2070, and by 4.7 °C by 2100. It is predicted that by 2100 the river flow in Armenia will decrease by 39%, the area of sub-alpine zones will be reduced by 21-22%, the steppe zone will expand. Due to declining rainfall and expected low humidity, forest ecosystems will begin to infiltrate desert plant species, which will lead to the replacement of forest ecosystems with sparse forests, and even intensification of desertification and biodiversity changes. It is predicted that these changes will have a negative impact on certain sub-sectors of tourism and places. The document develops 18 measures, the initial estimated financial value of which makes up about 302 million AMD.
