Angeghakot Village, Syunik Region, drastically needs irrigation water. This village having a population of 1860 people loses its main source of income, cattle breeding, because of water. Angeghakot Village gets its irrigation water from Spandaryan reservoir. The villagers mentioned that three SHPPs located above their fields deprive their village of the water, which are not included in the administrative area of Angeghakot Village, but use the water of Spandaryan reservoir. The SHPPs located in the administrative area of Angeghakot Village don’t disturb the irrigation as there are located lower than the village fields.
“We don’t have irrigation water, so this year people didn’t water potatoes. The water canal is located above our fields, it’s our old canal from where we take our water and irrigate our land areas. Now because of the SHPPs the water is not sufficient.”
“The SHPPs constructed in our village don’t disturb us, there are three SHPPS constructed above, which disturb us, in the area from Gorayk to Sisian,” said Angeghakot another villager, “Our irrigation water is cut off, you can’t get water even once a week to water our potato fields.”
“SHPPs don’t cause problems with irrigation. Angeghakot Community has an irrigation problem connected with Spandaryan reservoir, which is in poor condition. We have applied to proper bodies and authorities to have the canal rehabilitated, as Angeghakot Village receives only 40 liters out of 1cum/s entering the canal. This is Angeghakot’s problem number one for today,” Angeghakot community head said.
The material has been prepared in the frames of “Support to the Reforms of SHPPs through a Dialogue between the Public and The Ministry of Nature Protection of the RA for the Purpose of River Ecosystem Use” project.
