On August 16, the Environmental Protection and Mining Inspection Body (EPMIB) received an alarm signal about pollution of the Debed River. Inspectors from the Lori and Tavush territorial divisions of EPMIB carried out hours-long inspections along the river to identify the possible source of contamination.
As a result, it was found that the pipeline leading from the Akhtala Mining and Processing Plant to “Nahatak” tailing dump facility had ruptured, which caused the river pollution, according to the Inspection Body.
Water and soil samples were taken from different sections of the river at the site. A report of an apparent crime has been submitted to the Investigative Committee of Armenia.
