“Vayq Gold” Company wants to construct Azatek gold-polymetallic ore dressing plant in a distance of several hundred meters from Arin Village, Vayots Dzor Region, as Arin villagers beat an alarm signal to EcoLur. Recently they saw a notice placed near their orchards, which says, “WITH GOD’S BLESSING IN 2015 AZATEK GOLD-POLYMETALLIC MINE ORE DRESSING PLANT WILL BE CONSTRUCTED HERE.”
“We are concerned…Our orchard is a big one and our villagers work here. Not only our orchards are endangered, which are located in a distance of 500 meters, but there are a number of orchards directly in the front of the plant: 20 ha of orchards are located in a distance of 150 meters, as well as wheat fields… There are 15 ha of hazelnut orchards nearby planted by the Italians, another two orchards…which are irrigated areas… The villagers want to plant trees and to grow wheat,” Qajik Kostanyan, Arin villager, told in his interview with EcoLur, and added they oppose to the construction of the plant, as they are aware what kind of hazards can generate.
It should be mentioned that “Vayq Gold” LLC is carrying out reassessment of the reserves in Azatek gold-polymetallic mine without having any documents from Nature Protection Ministry, as required by the law.
Under RA Law “On Environmental Impact Assessment and Expertise”, the project of constructing an ore dressing plant shall, first of all, undergo environmental expertise and then public hearings. Only after Nature Protection Ministry issues a positive opinion to the project, “Vayq Gold” will be entitled to construct this plant.
