The main aim of the project is promoting green urban development with a focus on energy efficient lighting and reducing municipal greenhouse gas emissions through investment projects and national policy enforcement. The main component is the external lighting system in Yerevan.
Nature Protection Minister Aram Harutyunyan valued the launch of this project. “Under conditions of climate change we promote the projects, which refer to energy efficiency, renewable energy, and we will get an outcome with joint efforts, which will be visible not only in the viewpoint of energy, but it will effectively promote the reduction of greenhouse gases,” said the Minister at the kick-off meeting of “Green Urban Lighting” project and assured that the project will promote creating more comfortable and harmonized environment for capital residents. Under the Minister, the pilot stage will be implemented this year.
UN Resident Coordinator, UNDP Resident Representative Bradley Busetto and First Deputy Mayor Kamo Areyan had opening speeches at the kick-off meeting. The main funding will be provided by GEF, while community municipalities will also make their financial contributions. The duration of the project is four years.
