Strike at Akhtala Mining and Processing Plant

Around fifty miners of “Akhtala Mining and Processing Plant” CJSC have been on strike for several days already. They are demanding a wage increase from the plant administration. As Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty’s Armenian Service (“Azatutyun”) informs, management representatives met with the protesters and conveyed that they would not make concessions and that there is currently no possibility to increase wages.

Gagik Shahnazaryan, Head of External Relations of “Akhtala Mining and Processing Plant” CJSC, stated that during negotiations they are not considering the possibility of a wage increase and are instead negotiating with the strikers to understand their demands. Meanwhile, Akhtala Administrative Head, Sevak Sargsyan, considered the miners’ demands justified, taking into account their “hard and dangerous work.” It is reported that notices of dismissal are being sent to the striking workers.

At the same time, “Akhtala Mining and Processing Plant” CJSC has issued an announcement inviting drillers to work in the underground mine, promising stable employment and competitive wages.

“Akhtala Mining and Processing Plant” CJSC operates Shamlugh copper mine. 100 percent of the company’s shares have been owned by Vahe Hakobyan, Former Director of Zangezur Copper-Molybdenum Combine and son of Maxim Hakobyan, Chairman of the Board of Directors since 2019.

The intermediary legal entity is “Masko Mine” CJSC, which operates in Yerevan.
