What Works Have Been Carried Out to Improve Yerevan’s Water Supply, Drainage, and Stormwater Systems: Municipality Responds

“EcoLur” Informational NGO sent an inquiry to Yerevan Mayor Tigran Avinyan, asking what programs have been implemented over the past five years by Yerevan Municipality, either independently or in cooperation with “Veolia Jur” CJSC, to improve the city’s water supply, drainage, and stormwater systems, and what results have been achieved.

In response, Narek Grigoryan, Deputy Head of Department of Public Utilities and Acting Head of Department, informed that during 2021–2025, within the framework of Yerevan Municipality’s programs, construction or reconstruction works were carried out on 2 addresses for water supply systems, 109 addresses for sewerage systems (construction works are ongoing at 22 addresses), and 6 addresses for stormwater systems (construction works are ongoing at 1 address).

EcoLur also inquired from which water sources water is drawn for the irrigation of green areas and tree-lined streets of Yerevan, as well as for the operation of fountains, and in what volumes.
Narek Grigoryan replied: “Water for irrigating the capital’s green areas and tree-lined streets is supplied by the ‘Yerevan’ and ‘Kotayk’ Water Users Companies of the Water Committee, as well as from deep wells. According to 2024 data (the 2025 data have not yet been summarized), the ‘Yerevan’ WUC supplied 4,517,500 cubic meters, and the ‘Kotayk’ WUC supplied 559,116 cubic meters. The water from deep wells is used within the limits of the normatively permitted quantities, according to each well’s authorization. Fountains are mainly supplied from deep wells, and some from irrigation water. The fountains and pools operated by  “Greening and Environmental Protection” SNCO are refilled with water once a week.”
