In 2008 Ecological Condition of Alaverdi Atmospheric Air Critical, Water Resources – Disastrous

In 2008 the ecological condition of the atmospheric air in Alaverdi town was critical, while those of water resources - disastrous. Under “GEO ALAVERDI: ENVIRONMENT AND TOWN DEVELOPMENT” “GEO ALAVERDI: ENVIRONMENT AND TOWN DEVELOPMENT”, the average annual concentration of sulfur dioxide exceeded MPC by 11.8 times, nitrogen dioxide – 1.7 times. Thus, the concentration of sulfur dioxide in the town atmosphere made up 0.59 μg/m3, nitrogen dioxide - 0.068 μg/m3.
In the samples taken from Debed River basin the average annual concentration of aluminum exceeded MPC by up to 14.5 times, vanadium – 6.0, chromium – 9.0, manganese – 4.8, copper – 9.0. Thus, the concentration of aluminum in the water of the Debed River made up 580 μg/l, vanadium – 60, chromium – 450, manganese – 240 and copper – 90.
In 75% of the samples the maximum concentration of sulfur dioxide exceeded MPC bby up to 2.0 times. Under EcoLur’s Ecological Risk Model, this excessive concentration doesn’t pose serious threat to health, while excessive concentration of chromium in Debed water caused disastrous condition, while the excessive concentration of sulfur dioxide caused the critical condition of the atmospheric air in Alaverdi.
