Maqenis (Kartchaghbyur) River flows in Gegharkounik Region, Armenia. It rises from the northern slopes of Vardenis mountain range at a height of 3325 meters. Its length is 23.6 km, its catchment basin is 123 sq. kilometers. Its water is used for irrigation purposes, which flows into Lake Sevan.
As of 1 January 2014, under the licenses issued by Public Services Regulatory Committee and the main indicators of small hydro power plants operated by hydropower companies, “Ani” SHPP is constructed on this river, which is operated by “Grigor Tadevosyan Quartz” LLC, derivation length - 800meters.
The SHPP pipes a total river area of 800 meters, which makes up 3.3898305% of the river.
Under EcoLur’s Ecological Risk Model, this indicator is within standards.
It should be mentioned that SHPPs constructed on this river and other rivers flowing into Lake Sevan hinder the endemic fish species of Lake Sevan to flow up the river for spawning purposes, and, as a result, the trout in Lake Sevan is on the verge of extinction due to overfishing and polluting the lake and rivers with household garbage and industrial wastes.
