Gegharot River in Critical Situation Because of SHPPs
EcoLur
Gegharout River is the right tributary to the Qasagh in Aragatsotn Region. It rises from the eastern slope of Aragats at a height of 3600 meters. Its length is 25 km, its catchment basin is 66 sq. kilometers. Its water is used for irrigation purposes, which flows into Qasagh.
As of 1 January 2014, under the licenses issued by Public Services Regulatory Committee and the main indicators of small hydro power plants operated by hydropower companies, the following SHPPs are constructed on this river:
- “Aragats-1” SHPP operated by “VAKUFLO” LLC, derivation length – 2350 meters,
- “Gegharot” SHPP operated by “El-Kas” CJSC, derivation length – 4640 meters,
The SHPPs pipe a total river area of 6990 meters, which makes up 27.96% of the river.
