Karakaya River in Crisis

EcoLur

The Karakaya River is one of the right-wing tributaries to the Yeghegis River. As ““Kara-Kaya” SHPP Re-equipment working project” says, the Karakaya River flows into the Yeghegis River in a distance of 25 km from the estuary. The length of the Yeghegis River is 47 km.

As of 1 January 2014, under the licenses issued by Public Services Regulatory Committee and the main indicators of small hydro power plants operated by hydropower companies, the following SHPPs are constructed on this river:

  1. “Karakaya” SHPP operated by “HAK HPP” LLC, derivation length – 1200.0 and 3127.0 meters,
  2. “SUNRISE” SHPP operated by “SUNRISE ELECTRIC” CJSC, derivation length – 2268  meters,
  3.  “Vardahovit” SHPP operated by “VARDAHOVIT” LLC, derivation length – 3570  meters,

The SHPPs pipe a total river area of 10165 meters. We were not able to find out the length of the Karakaya River. But it’s commonly known that the tributary is shorter than the river. Even if the Karakaya had the same length of 47 km, as the Yeghegis River, when adding the lengths of SHPP derivation 21.62766% of the river will be piped.

Under EcoLur’s Ecological Risk Model, this indicator shows the critical situation of the river.

But as the Karakaya is factually shorter than the Yeghegis, it’s obvious that more SHPP pressure is exercised on the river.
