The Vorotan River flows in the territory of Armenia, it’s the main river in Syunik and the right tributary to the Aras River. It rises from the northwest slopes of Syunik highland – from Khalkha Lake and adjacent springs located at the height of 3045 meters, receives several brooklets from small lakes, as well as the water from the springs in Gorayq Village, then flows southeast in the areas of Sisian and Goris, receives Hagara (Aghvano) brooklet and joins the Aras River starting from Minjevan station. Its length is 178 km, out of which 119 km within the borders of Armenia, the catchment area is 5650 sq. km, out of which 2300 sq. km within the borders of Armenia. The catchment area of the Vorotan River includes 25 rivers.
As of 1 Jenuary 2014, under the licenses issued by Public Services Regulatory Committee, the following SHPPs are constructed on this river:
- “Vorotna HPP” SHPP operated by “Hakobjanyan and Galstyan HPP” LLC, derivation length – 3220 meters,
- “Shinuhayr” SHPP operated by “Zangezour-95”, derivation length – 1555 meters,
