"The green face of Yerevan is not suitable for the capital in the 21st century. We have destroyed a number of urban forests, deformed tree species. It is necessary to restore those forests as quickly as possible, to replace non-viable and useless trees. The problem requires an urgent solution, because the main means of combating air pollution in Yerevan are green plantations. This is important for the health of our citizens, as well as the decorative appearance of the city."
This was announced by Armen Begoyan, Director of Yerevan Municipality "Greening and Environmental Protection" ANC, on February 23 at the scientific conference held in the municipality.
"About 50% of our green fund no longer fulfills its function. Tree replacement will begin in Yerevan, we are talking about ten-year-old trees. The goal is not only to restore green spaces, but to triple and quadruple them," Tigran Avinyan said.
"The state of air pollution forces us to take effective measures," Tigran Avinyan emphasized.
Armen Begoyan mentioned that already established trees will be planted, because "they can't fill in what is missing at a normal pace." "We don't have time anymore, instead of 2000 drams we will pay 70,000, we will bring a 10-year-old tree. The works are extensive, according to my estimation, they will last 10 years", Armen Begoyan mentioned.
It should be noted that Yerevan is in an ecologically critical situation. In the process of greening, the most important protective function is the extent to which the trees are able to absorb harmful substances contained in the air, protect from direct sunlight, also how resistant they are to external negative factors and, of course, how much they improve the aesthetic appearance of the city.
