Legislative Recommendations Aimed at Protection of Genetic Resources of Plants Discussed at National Academy of Sciences of The Republic of Armenia

On August 28, 2024, the RA National Academy of Sciences held a session of RA NAS Biodiversity and Biosecurity Problem Council dedicated to urgent issues of protection of plant genetic resources.

Armenia is one of the most important cradles of plant biodiversity, where more than 3800 types of vascular plants grow, 146 of which are endemic species. The need to develop domestic legislation regulating the conservation of plant genetic resources becomes urgent.

At the suggestion of Ruben Harutyunyan, Academician-Secretary of the Department of Natural Sciences of NAS RA, it was decided to establish a working group that will develop a set of legislative recommendations aimed at the sustainable and long-term preservation of plant genetic resources, the management of the export of plant material. The package of legislative recommendations will be submitted to the Armenian government.
