“Through Joint Efforts and Support from International Partners, It Is Possible to Establish Effective and Sustainable Water Resources Management System”: Hambardzum Mathevosyan

RA Minister of Environment Hambardzum Mathevosyan participated in the expert session titled “How to Preserve the Global Water Balance” within the framework of the International Conference on Nature and Environmental Protection held in the Altai Republic. This was reported by the official website of the Ministry of Environment.

Representatives from Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Belarus, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, and Turkmenistan also took part in the session.

In his speech, the Minister addressed the negative impacts of climate change on water resources, emphasizing that Armenia’s mountainous ecosystems are particularly vulnerable under changing climatic conditions. The decline in precipitation and reduction of water reserves are increasing the vulnerability of the water sector.

Hambardzum Mathevosyan outlined the measures undertaken by the Armenian government, including: introduction of water-saving technologies and drip irrigation systems, implementation of programs to reduce losses in water systems, legislative reforms in water resources management,  adoption of National Five-Year Adaptation Program for Climate Change (2022–2026), aimed at reducing climate risks in the water sector and ensuring the effective implementation of adaptation strategies.

The Minister also highlighted the preservation of Lake Sevan’s water balance and restoration of ecosystems as a national priority.

During the conference, he underlined the importance of international cooperation and experience exchange. In this context, he emphasized the significance of the upcoming 17th meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP17) to the Convention on Biological Diversity, to be held in Armenia in 2026, inviting partner countries to participate actively.

The Minister expressed confidence that through joint efforts and international support, it is possible to develop an effective and sustainable water resource management system that will contribute to the development of both Armenia and the entire region.
