Government of Armenia Imposed a Six-Month Ban on Export of Sevan Whitefish Roe

At its session on December 25, 2025, the Government of the Republic of Armenia imposed a ban on the export of Sevan whitefish (sig) roe from the territory of Armenia for a period of six months. The aim of the measure is to ensure the conservation and natural reproduction of this commercially high-value fish species.

According to the rationale provided in the draft resolution, a stable biomass of Sevan whitefish has been observed in recent years in Lake Sevan.

However, the natural growth and optimal population levels of this wild fish species in the lake have not yet been fully ensured. According to certain scientific data, the lake needs to maintain a total stock of up to 10,000 tons, with commercial fishing volumes of around 2,000 tons or more, in order to achieve sustainable balance.
