Ban on Construction of SHPs in Sevan Basin Included in Governmental Proposal Package

EcoLur

The National Assembly has received a package of proposals from the government in regard with making amendments to a number of laws in force, including RA Law “On Biosafety of Use of Genetically Modified Organisms”. This list doesn’t include RA Law “On Lake Sevan”, while it was proposed to be amended two years ago.  In regard with these amendments, the law should contain a ban on the construction of SHPs on the rivers, where trout and other endemic fish species spawn. In reality, the experts several times expressed their concerns with the expediency of these amendments, as it says these amendments don’t cover the HPPs, which have already been constructed. “In this way they want to legalize the service term of those HPPs, which already impact on Lake Sevan ecosystem”, said one of the experts to EcoLur.  How many SHPs should be constructed in Sevan basin for introduced amendments not to have any significance for the rivers, fish and Sevan itself?
