Bird species in Armenia are decreasing: out of 359 species 96 species were red-listed in new Red Book of Armenia published in 2010. For comparison, 67 bird species were red-listed in Red Book of Armenia in 1987.

“The Armenian Society for the Protection of Birds” Co-Founder Lyuba Balyan: “Mining has an essential impact, which mainly makes the area in its radius extinct, and it can have impact in dozens of kilometers. It’s not only about red-listed species, but also ordinary species,” Lyuba Balyan said, “We can see changes in the landscape, degradation of ecosystem, which is a necessary living environment not only for birds, but also other animal species.”

Armash lakes in Ararat Region have been dried up and are used as agricultural land areas. After drying up a part of the lakes, many rare bird species have either got extinct or flown away from Armash.

“The Nature Protection Ministry is already discussing to take measures to be able to provide additional water to Armash to save the living environment,” Tsovinar Hovhannisyan said.
