1-2 leopards are annually killed by poachers in Armenia, Head of World Wildlife Fund- Armenia (WWF-Armenia) Karen Manvelyan told journalists.
He pointed out that a total of 5-7 species of leopards remain all over the country. "Since 2002 we have been implementing programmes on protection of leopards, however, the hunting outside the protected territories continues",- Manvelyan said. He stressed that at the moment poaching in Armenia is one of the most urgent problems.
A photo exhibition dedicated to the International Day for Environmental Protection opened at 'Moskva' cinema. Within the frames of the exhibition, funds are being raised, which will be spent on financing anti- poaching brigades and logistics",- he said. About 80 photos by are exhibited Coordinator of WWF programme on protection of leopards Alexander Malkhasyan are presented at the exhibition.
To note, presentation of the documentary film 'Poaching' took place at 'Moskva' cinema today, in which various ecological organizations give their assessment to this phenomenon. After showing the film WWF-Armenia programme on fighting consequences of global warming via guarding and restoration of woods started. The total of 530 ha of woods will be planted within the frames of the programme.
