Water Issue in Yerevan New Master Plan

Water Issue in Yerevan New Master Plan

"Ecolur" Informational NGO has studied Yerevan new master plan and Yerevan's Green City Action Plan. In Ecolur's new report, the 2024 adopted master plan of Yerevan has been analyzed in terms of its alignment with the targets of Yerevan's Green City Action Plan. The report has been discussed with state bodies and civil society and published on EcoLur's website.
This material will address issues in the water sector.

One of the goals of Yerevan's Green City Action Plan is to ensure efficient drinking water supply with minimal losses in the system and effective wastewater treatment by 2030. The Hrazdan River should become a highly attractive place for local residents and tourists to relax.
According to Yerevan's new master plan, the demand for water for household and industrial purposes in the capital is expected to increase. We are already witnessing the issue of water deficit today. The household water supply in the capital does not meet the city's demand, with only 44% of the population provided with round-the-clock water supply.

According to EcoLur's observation, the increase in demand for household water has not been considered a problem in the context of expected water scarcity in the master plan, and no solutions aimed at overcoming it have been presented. The solution to the problem is beyond the jurisdiction of Yerevan Municipality.

The sewage network of the capital is also an issue. The network is actually constructed with low-quality pipes, with numerous construction deficiencies. Yerevan does not ensure proper wastewater treatment. The operation of the stormwater system is currently being carried out at a very low level due to the lack of financial resources, "The boundaries of the sanitary second zone have not been determined for any of the water supply sources of Yerevan City."

According to EcoLur's observation, the regulation of the problem does not go beyond the level of studies in the master plan.

According to the conclusion of EcoLur's report, the goals of Yerevan's Green City Action Plan have not been considered in the master plan.
