Four-Year Program for Improving Yerevan’s Air Quality Developed

A four-year program aimed at improving air quality in Yerevan has been developed, as Acting Head of Environmental Protection Department of Yerevan Municipality, Sirarpi Haykazyan, informed during an operational meeting on February 11.

"The program involves identifying key pollutants and describing the activities related to each of them. It also includes several mitigation processes," Haykazyan noted.

Yerevan Mayor Tigran Avinyan responded: "A significant portion of air pollution is not human-induced. However, there are human-related factors, including construction, transportation, mining, heating, and landfills. Our main goal is to introduce new regulations regarding the human-induced component."

Experts from Ecolur Informational NGO have studied the causes of atmospheric air pollution in the capital, the proposed solutions in Yerevan’s new master plan, and the city’s Green City Action Plan. The main sources of air pollution in Yerevan include construction, transportation, mining, degraded land areas, Nubarashen landfill site, and industrial enterprises.

The master plan does not identify all sources of air emissions or propose comprehensive solutions. Additionally, there is no assessment of air quality or the impact of air pollution on public health. Ecolur’s experts have discussed the issue with representatives from the public and government sectors.
