Yerevan plans to construct a sanitary landfill using loan financing. In response to Ecolur’s inquiry, the Acting Head of Environmental Protection Department of Yerevan Municipality, Sirarpi Haykazyan, stated in letter No. 17/173399-25 that work is currently underway to develop a new investment loan program for the construction of a new sanitary landfill in Yerevan.
The response letter from Yerevan Municipality states:
“At this stage, the main partner is the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development. At the same time, we are also cooperating with the World Bank and the Asian Development Bank. On December 12, 2025, a tender was announced for the selection of an international consultant to prepare the feasibility study and the tender documentation for the loan program.
Provided that all processes proceed smoothly, including the approval of the investment program and financing by the Government of the Republic of Armenia, we expect construction works to commence in the autumn of 2026. This timeline is extremely ambitious, given that the project will be implemented in cooperation with international financial institutions and, therefore, in accordance with international procedures. It is also necessary to take into account that the implementation of the investment program will be based on compliance with European standards, guided as well by the priorities of the Armenia–EU Comprehensive and Enhanced Partnership Agreement (CEPA).”
