"Night of Ideas": France and Armenia, Climate Change and Sustainable Development


The phenomena that threaten nature and the planet Earth are increasing day by day and becoming uncontrollable. But what should be done to make the fight against environmental issues more effective? The specialists of the field addressed these and other environmental issues during "Night of Ideas" event held in Yerevan Municipality on January 30, 2020.

Opening remarks were made by First Counselor of French Ambassador Claire Le Flecher, First Deputy Mayor of Yerevan Hrachya Sargsyan, Deputy Minister of Environment Irina Ghaplanyan.

During the roundtable on environmental issues in Armenia and around the world, environmental issues were discussed by Sustainable Development Researcher and Consultant Caroline Gervais, President of EcoLur Informational NGO Inga Zarafyan, UNDP Armenia Climate Change Programme Coordinator Diana Harutyunyan and Head of WWF Armenia Karen Manvelyan.

The speakers presented the biodiversity issues related to climate change, water resource depletion issues, Lake Sevan vulnerability, and Armenia's steps to mitigate climate change impact. EcoLur screened a film on the impact of climate change on Lake Sevan and other factors damaging the lake.

Inga Zarafyan noted that it is important in the process of problem solution to involve not only officials but also civil society in the decision-making process. According to Diana Harutyunyan, all environmental issues should be discussed with the participation of professionals. Karen Manvelyan prioritized nature preservation.
