Climate Changing - Water Resources Decreasing: 26 Adaptation Measures

It is necessary to implement 26 priority measures for climate change adaptation in the field of water resources in Armenia, as laid down in "Water Sector Adaptation Plan and its Program of Measures for 2022-2026" approved by RA government.

Under the document, it is planned to carry out a technical and economic study of the construction of 6 priority reservoirs and the start of construction, development and implementation of hydrogeological and hydrological models for Sevan basin management area and Ararat valley. In 2022-2026, the construction of 14 new hydrological observation points, the implementation of pilot projects for the reuse of purified wastewater in the Ararat Valley for irrigation purposes are also planned.

The preliminary cost estimate for the implementation of 26 priority measures amounts to 51.3 billion AMD.

It should be noted that as a result of climate change, river flows are predicted to decrease, which will inevitably lead to the deterioration of water quality. Climate change will affect Lake Sevan basin. According to the fourth national report of the Republic of Armenia, it is predicted that the annual river inflow into Lake Sevan will decrease by 17.5-33.8% by 2100, depending on the scenario.

"Water Sector Adaptation Plan and its Program of Measures for 2022-2026" has been developed within the frameworks of “National Adaptation Plan to advance medium and long-term adaptation planning in Armenia” project implemented with the funding of Green Climate Fund and with the support of the UNDP.
