Climate Shifting Agriculture: Adaptation Measures Needed

Climate change will have a significant impact on the agricultural sector in Armenia. The productivity of irrigated lands will be reduced by about 24%, the total area of pastures and their productivity by 4-10%, the yield of hay by 7-10%, the yield of crops by 8-14%. The additional requirement of irrigation water will makes up about 202 million cubic meters: this is what "Armenia assessment of agricultural sector vulnerability to climate change and climate change adaptation: legal and institutional framework" report states.
According to the document, the number of natural disasters in the territory of Armenia has increased by about 20%.

The authors of the report suggest developing a "smart" national agriculture program to ensure gender equality in agriculture.
Overall, according to the report, government support to the agricultural sector is limited, and climate change mitigation and adaptation programs are small-scale.

"Armenia assessment of agricultural sector vulnerability to climate change and climate change adaptation: legal and institutional framework" report has been drafted in the scope of the UNDP-GCF “National Adaptation Plan to advance medium and long-term adaptation planning in Armenia” UNDP-GCF/00104267 project.
