

On January 4, 2023, the Government of the Republic of Armenia approved the minimum norms for the operation, improvement and closure of existing and operating landfills in the territory of the Republic of Armenia.
According to this resolution, it is forbidden to place explosive and flammable materials, medical institutions and slaughterhouses and other biological waste, electronic and electrotechnical equipment waste, mercury-containing lamps and other products, electric accumulators and batteries, vehicles and their tires, as well as those stored without special containers in the landfill. liquid waste. Open burning of garbage in the landfill area is prohibited.
It is not clear which body should deal with the issue of prohibited waste in landfills, where it should be collected and used.
It is not possible to include in the greenhouse gas cadastre the quantitative and qualitative data of the greenhouse gases emitted from unaccounted, elementally, unorganized garbage heaps or landfill sites.
It is necessary to clarify which body is responsible for the operation of landfill sites and with what financial means.
As of June 2020, the number of landfill sites inventoried and mapped made up 297.
Garbage collection is carried out in 443 out of 501 communities in Armenia. The population of 58 rural settlements not included in the garbage collection system is 46,000, that is, 1.6 percent of the population of the republic is not provided with garbage collection services.
1,887 tons of garbage or 688,937 tons of garbage per year are generated in the settlements of the country.
