On January 26, the International Day on Clean Energy is celebrated for the first time in the world, the United Nations informs: this decision was adopted by the UN General Assembly in August 2023.
“Coal, oil and gas emit nearly 90 percent of global carbon dioxide emissions. Fossil fuels still dominate global energy production, but renewable sources already provide about 29 percent of the world's electricity," UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said.
In Armenia, the transition to clean energy sources is important.
At the 28th conference of the parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP 28) held in Dubai on December 1, 2023, RA President Vahagn Khachaturyan announced: "Armenia's climate ambitions are largely anchored on the transition to carbon-neutral energy, and the fulfillment of climate obligations can be realized through the long-term and sustainable use of nuclear energy."
By 2030, we aim for a 15% share of solar energy in our total energy production. Armenia firmly believes that the attainment of our climate commitments can be achieved with long-term and sustainable use of nuclear power as a carbon-neutral source of energy and we appreciate the efforts of the International Atomic Energy Agency in this regard.
