Debet Settlement Challenges and Measures to overcome Them

On June 27, 2025, a regional consultation was held at the COAF SMART Center in Debet, Lori Region, to assess community needs in implementing climate change mitigation and adaptation policies. The event brought together members of the National Assembly, local officials from Pambak, representatives from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), NGOs, experts, and youth leaders.

The consultation was part of the UNDP project “Fostering Responsive, Effective, Transparent, and Inclusive National Assembly of Armenia” (FORSETI), funded by the Governments of Sweden and Canada in cooperation with the Armenian Parliament.

Administrative Head of Debet Anush Sargsyan presented the climate-related challenges facing Debet and the measures being taken to address them.

In her speech, the administrative head noted that over the past 10 years, the average temperature has increased, and soil fertility is declining due to erosion and disruption of biological balance. These factors are leading to reduced crop yields and putting agriculture at risk.

The warm and humid weather has contributed to the activation of pests, and in recent years, there has also been an increase in plant diseases in Debet, particularly the spread of mold and fungal infections.

The administrative head also emphasized the importance of including climate response and sustainable development measures in planning and funding proposals:

Sustainable agriculture: Promote organic and conservation tillage methods to ensure soil fertility is maintained.

Efficient water use: Introduce drip and modern irrigation systems to minimize water loss.

Solar energy: Continue installing solar panels to ensure the community's energy self-sufficiency.

Hail protection systems: Expand the use of anti-hail nets and devices in agriculture.

Greening and reforestation: Carry out continuous tree planting and forest restoration programs.

Anti-flood infrastructure: Reinforce water channels and build structures to protect against flooding.

Public awareness: Organize education and training sessions for residents on climate adaptation topics.
