World Environment Day 2026 Marked on June 5 Under Theme “Now for Climate”
World Environment Day is marked globally on June 5. In 2026, the day is being marked with a global call for climate action under the slogan “Now for Climate.”

To mark the occasion, the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) has launched a global campaign. “The planet is not arguing. It is not negotiating. It is sending signals—rising sea levels, raging wildfires, heatwaves, melting glaciers. We said 1.5°C was the limit. We are already crossing that line,” UNEP states.

Climate change is no longer a threat of the future; it is already transforming lives around the world. “To keep global warming within 1.5°C, annual greenhouse gas emissions must be cut in half by 2030. Without action, levels of air pollution exceeding safe standards are projected to increase by 50 percent over the next decade, while the volume of plastic waste entering aquatic ecosystems is expected to triple by 2040.  World Environment Day 2026 reminds us that there is still time to change course. The Earth is sending us signals. The question is how we will respond. Immediate and decisive action is needed to meet these challenges,” UNEP emphasizes.

For Armenia, temperatures are projected to rise by 2.8°C by 2050. Alongside increasing temperatures, precipitation could decline by as much as 8.3 percent by the end of the century. If greenhouse gas emissions are not reduced globally, temperatures in Armenia could increase by as much as 5°C by 2100.
