The Pan-Armenian Environmental Front (PEF), “EcoLur” Informational NGO and Public Environmental Alliance have sent their opinion to Nature Protection Minister Aramayis Grigoryan on new SHPPs, particularly on the construction of two “Artavan” SHPPs on the Artavan River. The public representatives consider it impermissible the construction of new SHPPs on the Artavan River and many other rivers. The letter addressed to Minister says, “Two projects of new SHPPs to be constructed on the Artavan River have been submitted to “Environmental Expertise” SNCO of Nature Protection Ministry.” Artavan River, which has only a length of 19 km, is already piped by 3.7. If these two SHPPs are constructed, the river will piped or a distance of 6.7 km or 35% of the river will be left without water, which will lead to the disastrous situation of the river and drastic deterioration of the river and adjacent ecosystems using the methodology of assessing the environmental flows. The accumulative environmental impact and current legislative gaps in this field make the construction of new SHPPs impermissible not only on the Artavan River, but also many other rivers in Armenia. It should be taken into consideration that unprecedented development of this field and numerous environmental gaps resulted in many serious socio-environmental and economic problems, and we have already submitted our proposals to the Armenian Government directed to solve these problems, which are currently at the stage of discussion.
