Diana Harutyunyan, the UNDP Climate Change Program Coordinator, made a speech on “Assessment of Energy Policy of the Republic of Armenia in Context of Commitments Undertaken by Armenia Under UN Climate Change Convention” at “Sustainable Energy Systems in the South Caucasus: Reality or Illusion?” discussion held at the American Univesity of Armenia with the support of Heinrich Böll Foundation (Germany). She particularly said, “In December 2015 the 21st UN Climate Change Convention was held in Paris. The member countries had drawn up their Intended Nationally Determined Constributions-INDC and submitted to the Secretariat of the Convention. The Armenian Government approved the INDC for Armenia with its protocol resolution no. 41 dated on 10 September 2015. The INDC for Armenia lays down the principles: Armenia remains as a developing country not included in the first annex of the Convention on Climate Change and undertakes quantitative commitment to limit the increase greenhouse gas emissions in case of adequate financial, technological and technical support.”

Diana Harutyunyan mentioned primary energy consumption indices and distribution of greenhouse gas emissions according to branches, “In 2012 the primary energy consumption made up 40% of 1990 in Armenia, while the consumption per capita made up 46.

Besides forest sector, the branch distribution of greenhouse gas emissions has the following view: 70% to energy sector, agriculture – 16.5%, industry – 6.7% and wastes – 6.4%.”

She noted that scenarios have developed to asses greenhouse gas emissions in Armenia and during their development strategic documents and agreements designed for the development of energy sector have been taken into consideration.
