In the frames of “Promoting Sustainable Dam Development at River-Basin-Scale in the Southern Caucasus” WWF Armenia has developed a database on where SHPPs can be constructed and where not.

This project is a regional one and is implemented in three countries – Armenia, Georgia and Azerbaijan. “The main aim of the project is connected with hydropower development, i.e. how the SHPPs affect on biodiversity, and the main goal is to collect information about existing SHPPs, to enter them into GIS system and to collect information on rare and endangered species inhabiting in these river basins,” Karen Manvelyan said. “This will enable to develop maps in future, which will show where a SHPP can be constructed and where not. It’s planned to be implemented in the second stage of the project, but even now we have a quite good database, which will allow both the Nature Protection Ministry, Energy and Natural Resources Ministry and different stakeholders to understand which river basins in Armenia are rich in biodiversity, where SHPPs can be constructed and where not and where more attention shall be paid in SHPP construction,” WWF Armenia director said.

"The material was  developed in the frames of “Supporting reforms in the sector of small hydro power plants through enabling a dialogue between civil society  and the Ministry  of Nature Protection for sustainable use of river ecosystems” supported by UNDP/GEF Small Grants Programme".
