Syunik region stands out with its rich history and unique beauty - majestic mountain ranges, deep gorges, forested areas, and biodiversity. Syunik is also known for its mineral resources, as both metallic and non-metallic mines have been exploited here since Soviet times.
Along with economic activity, mining also creates environmental problems for the region. Due to the impact of mining infrastructure, various elements of the environment - soil and water - become contaminated with heavy metals, which negatively affects communities.
To identify issues, improve the ecological situation of affected communities, discuss alternative development opportunities, and gather proposals for green transformation, meetings have been organized in Kapan and Meghri by "Arnika" Czech organization and "Center for Community Mobilization and Support".
In EcoLur’s video, representatives of "Arnika" discuss the Czech experience of green transformation in communities, while a representative of "Center for Community Mobilization and Support" talks about the prospects of applying these practices in Armenia. Local residents present the existing issues in the region as well as their vision for green development and transformation.
The article was prepared within the framework of "Ecological Transformation of Armenia’s Mining Areas" project implemented by Czech "Arnika" organization, "Center for Community Mobilization and Support" and EcoLur
