On 18 October Energy and Natural Resources Minister Armen Movsisyan signed a memorandum on mutual understanding with the US Ambassador to Armenia John Heffern in the sphere of energy. One of the main clauses is the safety of Armenian nuclear power plant. The operation service of ANPP finishes in 2016. Nevertheless, by the decision of the Armenian government this term has been prolonged for another 10 years, the new power unit won’t be constructed. The Ambassador Heffern stated that the USA is willing to provide needed technical help. This is all the information that people have. Whether it’s possible for the technical help to include the replacement of worn-out equipment or conducting stress tests or the construction of a graveyard for radioactive wastes or supply of fuel or something else? The Ministry keeps silence about this. Another question, what kind of participation the Armenian-Russian organization has in all this set up for the service of nuclear sector of energy? Political proposals have also been actively discusses in the mass media. Nevertheless, environmental society is interested in the price of risk about which the Energy Letter keeps silence.
