In 2013 the government intends to allot 60,000,000 AMD from the state budget to recover trout population in Lake Sevan. These measures are carried out annually, almost in the range of the same amount. Nevertheless, positive outcomes are not so particularly obvious. Bardukh Gabrielyan, Director of the Scientific Center for Zoology and Hydroecology of NAS RA, speaks about probable reasons. “...What about the recovery of trout population, matters don’t go ahead...The young fish has been let out into the lake for several years. They are artificially bred in fish farms. Their further fate in the lake is problematic, as they are almost completely caught out when they are supposed to spawn. There is no natural reproduction in Lake Sevan. The first and foremost problem is fish poaching, another reason is the state of the rivers, where spawning should take place. Such rivers are practically not left… Recently we have visited Kartchaghbyur, where a part of water is taken for the needs of SHP, the other part is used by the community for agricultural needs, and the water is taken for the ponds where fish is bred. This fish is the rainbow trout and not Sevan species, and we already have information that it started appearing in the lake, which is very dangerous for the survival of our endemic species we want to recover…
The whole river ecosystem is completely disturbed and we already can’t speak about natural spawning. The same situation is in other rivers – Gavar and Litchq. Without natural reproduction there can’t be any recovery of population. It turns out that each year the government spends not little funds and all these funds flow into the pockets of poachers…”Gabrielyan thinks.
