After the presidential elections there are no serious expectations in regard with solving the environmental problems of Armavir region. “Unfortunately, I should state that the candidates don’t refer to environmental problems so frequently or even if they touch this topic in their programs, environmental problems are very little discussed in their oral speeches or meeting with voters. There are salinated land areas in Armavir region, which mainly deals with agriculture, and though there were promises during the parliament elections to solve this problem, nevertheless no actions have been taken so far. This problem is most acute in the communities of Zartonq and Artashar, where agricultural land areas are on the verge of desertification. Each year they get more and more saline, and are exposed to double salination, and if we sometimes hear that programs are planned against salination or these programs are implemented, we can’t eye witness these programs, which well show there was a fight against salination or some kind of measures. I can point out the same situation in the presidential elections as well,” said A. Stepanyan. In her opinion, the problem is also with the society. Armavir residents are not so interested in environmental problems, as the most important issue to solve how to earn their living. “The construction of the second power unit of ANPP is also supposed to disturb Armavir residents and especially Metsamor residents, but the fact is they are indifferent. Even the regional authorities mention that we creates so many working places, and if there are working places, that’s good,” A. Stepanyan said. In her opinion, they need to raise the legal consciousness of citizens so as they realize what kind of problems they face and how they can fight.
