“We Are This City’s Owners” civic initiative has withdrawn from the environmental committee of Yerevan Municipality. The statement circulated by the initiative says, “Hundreds of public territories in Yerevan are illegally captured (including two illegal cases in Opera)”.
“We Are This City’s Owners” civic initiative has decided to withdraw from the environmental committee of Yerevan Municipality. Within 6 months the opinions and discussions didn’t have any significance both Yerevan municipality decisions and departments. At this moment two illegal constructions are in progress in the heart of Yerevan, in Jazzve and Oriento cafes.
Months ago 40 illegal site developments in the important public areas of Yerevan submitted by the initiative haven’t received legally grounded explanations from Yerevan Municipality, while 20 proposals and enquiries about the expenditure of budget funds have been left without any respond.
So far the Yerevan Municipality hasn’t clarified when the destroyed building at 28 Khanjyan St. will be dismantled and why people guilty haven’t been punished yet. The concrete and stones on the roots of pine trees in the park near Opera witness no lessons have been learnt from Mashtots Park.
Given the fact that the Municipality can’t control the lawfulness in the site developments of Closed market, Opera and other 40 cases and can’t resist to individuals’ interest we consider our participation in the environmental committee senseless.
All this implies direct responsibility of city authorities and shows that Yerevan citizens have to protect on their own the Yerevan territory from Yerevan Municipality and private interests.”
