Nature Protection Ministry Informs that Lake Sevan Catchment Basin Ineffectively Administered

The Nature Protection Ministry acknowledges that Lake Sevan Catchment Basin in ineffectively administered, as the introduction to the concept paper on strategic planning of environmental problems developed by the Ministry says.

It should be mentioned that the draft decision “On approving the concept paper on strategic planning of environmental problems” has been submitted for the approval of the government.

The concept paper mentions the following main ecological problems in Armenia:

1. The destruction of catchment basins with biological significance and superhumid teэrritories.
2. Inefficient management of natural resources, particularly the inefficient management, overexploitation and impoverishment of Lake Sevan catchment basin, inequality in availability of natural resources, degradation of forests and land areas, and desertification.
3. Reduction of biodiversity,
4. Exceeding maximum permissible concentration of emissions and leaks into environment,
5.  Improper use of hazardous substances and wastes,
6.  Natural and man-made disasters,
7.  Inadequacy of environmental impact assessment monitoring,
8.  Incomplete public education and awareness in environmental issues.
