Activist: “They Threw Us on The Ground, Sat on Us and Kicked”

During one year the Public Services Regulatory State Committee increases the electricity price for the second time once again hitting the pocket of ordinary citizens. On 23 June violence was exercised over peaceful demonstrators near the building of the committee thus exercising pressure on the people opposing to the increase in electricity price, as EcoLur Press Club hosts told on 25 June at EcoLur Press Club. “Our protest demonstration was a peaceful one and we just wanted to express our demands. We wanted to approach the building of the committee. That day 27 people were detained,” said demonstration participant Sergey Ghahramanyan and noted that the police give the reason of not fulfilling policemen’s legal orders, while it’s still unclear what the policemen’s legal orders were.

“We have taken part in many protest demonstrations, but so far no demonstration was attempted to be suppressed in such a violent manner,” said Hayk Avetisyan, who was detained on 23 June. He warned the citizens not to hit policemen under such conditions, “This is what they exactly want.”

Human Rights Defender Tigran Yegoryan presented the former and current activities of the Armenian police and gave general assessment of the situation.
