Ambassador Heffern: Civic Activism in Armenia Second Strongest Among Post-soviet Countries

The Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of the USA to Armenia John Heffern on his videoblog Ambassador Heffern’s videoblog – Episode 26 – Civic Activism touches tоpic of civic activism in Armenia. He thinks civic activism can promote positive changes in the area of democratic changes.

 Ambassador Heffern particularly notes, “Civic activism is viable to the health of the democracy, Under the recent USAID assessment, the civic society in Armenia is the second strongest among post-soviet countries. In June Secretary State Hillary Clinton and international community honored the environmental activists who through their non-violent campaigns preserved Trchkan waterfall. The same group of activists also succeeded in keeping this green Mashtots Park. The activists demanded accountability for the tragic beating death of military doctor, an incident at Harsnaqar restaurant. Armenian civil society is growing stronger,” the ambassador noted. He also noted one of obstacles is the legal restriction on these organizations to charge fees for non-profit making activities.
