The development of solar energy in Armenia is quite active in the recent years. The state has already set the tariff for solar energy - 42.645 AMD/kWph without VAT. Lately, the agreement on the construction of 'Masrik 1' solar photovoltaic station, the first industrial-scale station, has been signed in Armenia. It is planned to construct solar stations with 100 mW capacity by 1 January 2020. The new government has stated that renewable energy has a serious strategic significance for Armenia. It will enable Armenia reducing its dependence from other energy resources and perform the commitment undertaken by the Paris Agreement, i.e. to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the ranges of 633 million tons in 35 years. Today solar energy has reached the rural communities in Armenia: due to “Solar Energy for Low-Carbon Sustainable Lifestyles in Solak, Aygavan and Malishka Rural Communities of Armenia” project, the emissions of CO2 in these rural communities will be reduced by 14 tons and 618 kg.
Knarik Grigoryan, an expert from AWHHE implementing this project noted, 'We have installed water hear with 300 liter capacity in the kindergarten of Solak Village. We have installed a solar photovoltaic system in Women's Center in Solak. In Malishka Village, 500 sq.m. area of 200 meters long in Street 1 has lighting through a solar photovoltaic system, which is installed at Culture House. The library and gym located at Culture House also receive their electricity from this source. The central street of the village is equipped with LED lamps. Aygavan residents have been provided with 21 solar dryers. We have estimated together with the experts that due to installing a 300-liter-capacity water heater, CO2 emissions are reduced by 1.6 tons during one year, solar photovoltaic system with 1.65 kW capacity helps to save 1.3 tons and 21 solar dryers have to save 11.718 tons totaling to the reduction of CO2 emissions by 14 tons and 615 kg,' said Knarik Grigoryan in the frames of the international seminar dedicated to renewable energy use and environmental protection organized at "Ani Plaza" Hotel.
Research Manager of the Institute for Global Environmental Strategies (IGES) Atsushi Watabe, expressed his satisfaction with the implementation of the project. He mentioned, that the implemented by AWHHE project on alternative solar energy is an excellent model not only for Armenia but also for the rest of the world to promote sustainable ways of living.
“Solar Energy for Low-Carbon Sustainable Lifestyles in Solak, Aygavan and Malishka Rural Communities of Armenia” project was launched in 2017. It is funded through the 10YFP Trust Fund established by UNEP. The project was selected through an open 10YFP Trust Fund Call for Proposals for Sustainable Lifestyles and Education Programme with the financial support of the Government of Japan.
