This year, the expenses for electricity and firewood in Shikahogh settlement of Kapan enlarged community, Syunik Region, have decreased by 20-25%. Within the framework of " Support Programme for the Protected Areas-Armenia" program grant, "Green Eco-Region" NGO implemented the program of installing solar water heaters in all 56 households of Shikahogh village adjacent to "Shikahogh" State Reserve.

Nare Ghazaryan, administrative representative of Shikahogh settlement, program manager, said in her conversation with EcoLur. "On average, sunny days in winter last 40-50 days. On the coldest days, the maximum water temperature is 30 degrees Celsius, and when there is sun, it is up to the boiling point.”

As a result of the project, the amount provided for the purchase of firewood in the village decreased by 80 thousand drams on average. "If before we used 20-25 cubic meters of wood, this year it has been reduced by 5 cubic meters. We pay 16-17 thousand drams for 1 cubic meter of wood," Nare Ghazaryan said. Nare Ghazaryan intends to apply for a new grant through her “Eco Community” NGO in the near future to provide all the farms in the village with solar panels. "If we have solar panels, we will finally get rid of the problem of using wood. If the program is implemented, the community will not need gasification.”
