EIA Project for Construction of "Akhuryan" SHHP 2 Rejected

On September 30, 2021, the Environmental Impact Assessment Center SNCO rejected the application for the Preliminary Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) of the construction project of "Akhuryan" SHPP-2 submitted by "Musaha" LLC. The negative conclusion was based on the crisis situation in the Akhuryan River, which is due to the over-exploitation of the river. The Akhuryan River is overloaded with 40% and over diversion pipes. There are red-listed fish species in the Akhuryan River, in case of which the construction of small HPPs on the given river may be prohibited.

It is also mentioned that the amount of water is not calculated correctly for the efficient operation of a SHPP. The water intake from the river for irrigation is not controlled; it is not calculated how much water is left in the river after irrigation to operate a SHPP to maintain the ecological balance of the river.
