The people in Gegharkounik Region are complaining that Lake Sevan is getting deprived of the water in Martuni River because of SHPPs.
'I spent all my childhood along the Martuni River. The river was so full of water that it flew away riders on horses. There was no water left after HPP construction. 4-5 villages use the water of the river, but now the river had died, you can see only stones in the riverbed. The nature punished those who treated it unfairly,' Anahit Gevorgyan said, Martuni Town resident, Chairperson of 'Communicty Council of Martuni Women' NGO.
She mentioned that no public hearings were held during the construction of the SHPP among the population and the SHPP had been constructed illegally. According to Anahit Gevorgyan, the SHPP doesn't provide any social support to the community. 'The river is supplying water to Sevan, even if the communities keep it clean, no SHPP can be constructed on it.'
The Martuni River arises from the nothern slopes of Vardenis Mountains and flows into Lake Sevan 2 km north from Martuni Town.
The material was developed in the frames of “Supporting reforms in the sector of small hydro power plants through enabling a dialogue between civil society and the Ministry of Nature Protection for sustainable use of river ecosystems” supported by UNDP/GEF Small Grants Programme".
