In the framework of the project entitled “Support to SHPP-relating Reforms Through the Dialogue of Public and RA Nature Protection Ministry for Sustainable Use of River Ecosystems” EcoLur visited borderline Tsav Village, Syunik Region.
Tsav Village with a population of around 500 people get money with agriculture and cattle breeding, where the Tsav River is used as irrigation source, where a SHPP has been constructed.
According to a Tsav Villager, the SHPP doesn’t hinder the irrigation: in low-water season it stops its operation. “The SHPP harms us, as it’s constructed in our village, but the villagers don’t benefit, just several people from the village are employed here,” Tsav villager said. “Let them at least make a discount of 10% for the villagers.”
We had a meeting with Tsav Villager Seyran Zaqaryan. According to him, the village used to have a conflict with the SHPP administration, which was later solved. “In the first year we used to have conflicts: they wanted to earn much money and used much water, but we didn’t allow them and now we have sorted out our problems. Now everything is OK and the SHPP doesn’t hinder the irrigation.” Seyran Zaqaryan also mentioned that the fish passway works normally, there is water in the river and each year the SHPP administration helps to solve a problem, for example, street lighting or rehabilitation of the rural ceremony hall.
