Ecolur presents its new video, “Armenia’s First Sanitary Landfill Site: A New Culture of Waste Management.”
Armenia’s first sanitary landfill was put into operation in 2025. It is located within the administrative territory of Hrazdan community and serves the communities of Kotayk and Gegharkunik Regions.
The landfill site's current cell was previously a clay quarry. It is now fully covered with a geomembrane liner to prevent soil and groundwater contamination. The site is equipped with a leachate collection system and gas extraction wells, which ensure safety and help prevent spontaneous combustion and fires.
The landfill is operated by “Kotayk and Gegharkunik Solid Household Waste Management” LLC, established by the communities of Kotayk and Gegharkunik Regions. The project, valued at approximately €15 million, was implemented through cooperation between the Government of the Republic of Armenia and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD).
In the video, the company’s director presents the advantages of the newly established landfill, while a company representative discusses the positive experience of waste sorting at the Solid Household Waste Management Center located on the company’s premises.

This material was created within “Waste Policy Armenia” (WPA) program, funded by Sweden and implemented by the AUA Acopian Center for the Environment, with financial support from Sweden and technical support from AUA.
