Armenia’s waste management sector is preparing for a significant transformation with the planned introduction of an Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) system. Under the proposed framework, producers and importers of certain products will be held responsible for the collection, recycling, and environmentally sound management of waste generated by those products after use. These responsibilities will be delegated to Producer Responsibility Organizations (PROs).
With support from Waste Policy Armenia (WPA) program implemented by the Acopian Center for the Environment at the American University of Armenia (AUA), Armenia’s Ministry of Environment has developed a draft Law on Extended Producer Responsibility.
In the video, Harutyun Alpetyan, Head of Waste Policy Armenia program, explains the current stage of the legislative process, outlines the recycling targets envisaged under the draft law, and describes the monitoring and enforcement mechanisms that will be introduced once the EPR system is implemented.
