Armenia May Lose Around 12,000 Ha of Forest In Case of Not Combating Pests

Pest activation is a serious problem for forests in Armenia. "There is a need for chemical neutralization of about 12,000 hectares of forests this year. We are discussing with our other departments about the involvement of possible technical means, including the possibility of involving helicopters, to cultivate those forests with medicine, to fight pests. For the third year in a row, due to lack of technical capacity, it has not been possible to carry out these processes.

"If for some reason it fails to do so this year, a situation may arise where we are in danger of losing those forests once and for all," RA Minister Environment Romanos Petrosyan said at the press conference held on January 26. He also touched upon the issue of drying pine forests in Armenia, noting that RA Environment Ministry applied to the specialists of the National Academy of Sciences to find out the reason for the drying of the trees.
