SHPPs Have an Influence on Forests

Small hydro power plants have an indirect influence on forests. Anush Nersesyan, Senior Research Worker at Botany Institute of NAS RA, said about this during the interview with EcoLur. "Besides forests are already under pressure because of deforestation. And the Small HPPs being built on the rivers flowing through the forests or by them, increase the danger for forests to wither", said Anush Nersesyan stating the Marts River in Lori region as an example. "About three years ago we were passing by the Marts River. We calculated that down in Marts village the river was included in the tube of the Small HPP in an area of 6 km. It was August, there was no water in the river in that area, there were only wet stones, the banks of the river weren't fed with water. It influences ecodiversity. Not far from the bank is the forest, which isn't watered and the ecosystem of the forest will be endangered', said Anush Nersesyan.

The material was  developed in the frames of “Supporting reforms in the sector of small hydro power plants through enabling a dialogue between civil society  and the Ministry  of Nature Protection for sustainable use of river ecosystems” supported by UNDP/GEF Small Grants Programme".
